Iceland sits on the boundary between the North American and European tectonic plates. A mantle plume of hot rock lies below Iceland, causing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to rise above sea level. There are about 130 volcanic mountains, of which 18 have erupted since humans arrived in the tenth century. One threatens to erupt (Bardarbunga) as I write this in August 2014.
