Vesuvius lies along a convergent plate boundary where the African plate slides beneath the European plate. In common with most volcanoes at convergent plate boundaries, eruptions from Vesuvius are explosive.

One of the most famous volcanic eruptions in history occurred on 24 August AD 79, when Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried the Roman city of Pompeii beneath seventy five feet of ash and pumice. Pompeii remained buried until excavations that began on March 23, 1748 revealed a Roman city frozen in time.
