Yellowstone sits on a mantle plume, a volume of hot rock. The interaction of the continental crust with the rising hot mantle material produces extremely viscous, relatively cool magma that when loaded with dissolved gases cause explosive eruptions. The myriad of geysers and other features are caused by the hot rock coming in contact with groundwater.
