   I went to Iceland to see the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (the only place to my knowledge where it can be seen above sea level) and the destruction caused by Eldfell when it erupted on Heimaey island in 1972. 

   As I expected Iceland was cold and windy (at least by Alabama standards) even though I was there in early August.  What did surprise me was the greenness of the lowlands.

   Iceland is sometimes called “the Land of Ice and Fire,” but it could just as well be called “the Land of Fire, Ice and Water", because rivers and waterfalls are very common. This set of images show mainly waterfalls and glaciers.
